St George Illawarra Dragons captain Gareth Widdop will lead the team for the pre-season fixture against Wynnum-Manly Seagulls at Pinklands Oval, Redlands on Saturday, February 6.

The England international is the first player named for the fixture against the Queensland Intrust Super Cup opposition which will mark the first occasion for 2016 where he will lead out the Dragons as the “official” Captain following Thursday's formal announcement.

Widdop Joins Creagh As Club Captain

“The pre-season trials are just around the corner and Redland Juniors and their sponsors are putting on a great game for us against the Wynnum-Manly Seagulls", said Widdop.

“I know all the boys are excited and are looking forward to the match.

“All the players know they need to put in a good performance as there is a lot of depth within the squad this season as well as competition for places.

“Whilst the team is yet to be finalised, I am sure that it will be a good opportunity me to play along side a few of the new players to our Club and for us to put into practice much of what we have been practicing throughout the pre-season."

The newly-appointed Team Captain also acknowledged the support that Club has in Queensland.

“Whenever we travel to Queensland it always feels like we are playing at home with the amount of support that we are shown by all the Red V Members and supporters,” said Widdop.

“I have no doubt this will be the case again and it should be a good game and a great opportunity for the local people and players at Redlands to see some NRL players and we are looking forward to meeting them and our Red V Members.

Tickets for the pre-season fixture, proudly organised by Redlands Juniors, are now available for purchase.
