St George Illawarra Dragons second-rower Bronson Harrison joined participants from the Go4Fun program at Figtree as part of their physical activity session on Monday.

Go4Fun® Program Manager, Michelle Kershaw said the Dragons supporting a physical activity session with the kids will build the children’s self-esteem and put a smile on their faces, which is what Go4Fun® is all about.

“Go4Fun® encourages children to take responsibility for their own health and offers tips to parents and carers on how they can make simple changes to improve the well-being of the whole family,” Mrs Kershaw said.

Local Mum, Melanie White has two daughters in the current Go4Fun® Figtree Program, Holly, aged 11 and Lauren, aged 13 and she said the girls are putting what they are learning into practice.

“The biggest change for Lauren is eating something healthy for breakfast every day before school and also making sure it is something she can eat on the run.

“My girls have always been good eaters with their vegetable and fruit consumption, but what we pinpointed through Go4Fun® was their portion sizes and their intake of oils and fats. Before we used to eat a lot of cold meat and now we have shredded chicken breast in the fridge for sandwiches. We changed the yoghurt we eat, drink skim milk and cut the fat off our roasts.

“A real eye opener for us was the supermarket tour. We changed to a different rice cracker and now check the sugar in pasta sauces. When we are reading labels, if there is more than 5 grams of sugar or fat in 100 grams, we pick another option.

“I am a full-time university student studying a Bachelor of Education and a full-time Mum and the girls have stuff on four nights a week, but fitting Go4FUn® in is so worth it, our fitness leaders are fantastic.

When asked about the Dragons supporting Go4Fun®, Mrs White said they are Red V members and recently won tickets at the Charity Shield match to go to a State of Origin Game.

“At their last Go4Fun® session the girls were told a special guest would be appearing on Monday 31 March and they are definitely hoping it will be the Dragons!” Mrs White said.

“We have already received enrolments for our Term 2 programs, so I would encourage parents to register soon so they don’t miss out,” Mrs Kershaw said.

Term 2 Go4Fun® programs commence on the following dates:

Dapto: 4-6pm every Tuesday from 29 April – 24 June, Horsley Community Centre, 82 Bong Bong Rd
