St George Illawarra Dragons Head Coach Steve Price was pleased with his sides performance in the first trial game against the combined Illawarra Cutters & Mudgee Dragons at WIN Jubilee Oval, Kogarah on Friday.

Entering his third season in charge of the Dragons, Price was delighted to see hard offseason training pay off in the first hit out of the new year but believes there is still room for improvement.

New signing Gareth Widdop impressed the coach with a positive display in his first outing in the in the Red V.

Price was glad to see Kyle Stanley and Gerard Beale return from injury with strong performances in the trial.

“That’s why we have trials,” said Price.

“It’s a good opportunity to see what we did right and what we need to improve on.

“There were definitely some positive signs there tonight but there’s still a lot of hard work to do yet.

“We spent a lot of time together working on the attack in the preseason so it was good to see that working out there but there is still plenty of work left to do.

“Gareth Widdop spent about 60 minutes in the number 6 and I thought he was very positive.

“I thought Kyle Stanley in his first game back did some really good stuff out there and defensively gave us a bit of line speed which was good to see.

“I was very pleased to see Gerard Beale out there after his injury with his legs turning over and giving us something extra in attack."
