St George Illawarra Dragons National Youth Competition team Head Coach Mat Head has praised his team following the 34-30 golden-point win over the North Queensland Cowboys at Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane on Friday.

The Young Dragons scored seven tries in the high-scoring affair with winger Matheson Johns clinching the victory for the team in the third minute of extra time.

Head admits he is pleased with the way several members of the team rose to the occasion and notes the squad will utilise the seven-day break to assess weaknesses which need to be improved.

“We have all reported back to training despite the break and have assessed what we need to work on over the course of the next two weeks,” said Head.

“It wasn’t an outstanding result and we were pretty lucky at the end considering there were three or four times when we thought we had won the game.

“The Cowboys are a sensational football team and they came back there towards the end and I thought they had snatched it.

“I thought that Luciano Leilua and Matt Dufty were quiet in the game and that the Cowboys had handled them quite well but Jai Field and Izaac Thompson were outstanding when the game was there to be won.

“Credit to all the boys who stepped up to get the win across the 85 minutes.”
