St George Illawarra Dragons prop Rory O’Brien enjoyed the opportunity to test himself in the 14-12 win over the Mackay Cutters in the pre-season fixture at Mackay Stadium on Saturday.

The Hurstville United junior  played 42 minutes in the trial encounter and endured a very competitive Queensland Cup side eager to impress their home fans.

O’Brien, who signed with the Dragons midway through last season, understands there are several areas from the game which will need to be worked upon prior to the season proper but is hopeful his performance is enough for him to continue wearing the Red V jersey.

“It was a tough hit-out and they certainly gave it to us and we had to really work hard for the win,” said O’Brien.

“There are definitely areas that we need to improve on which is the reason why we play trials but there were also positives we can take from the game too.

“We are still learning combinations and such which was good and we will return to watch the video to assess what we can improve upon.

“It was good for me to wear the Red V jersey alongside some very talented players and hopefully I have done enough for that to remain the case in the coming weeks.”
