NRL Round 1 Preview: Flanagan Era dawns on the Gold Coast

The Dragons will meet the Titans on Saturday, March 9th at Cbus Super Stadium, Gold Coast in Round 1 of the 2024 Telstra Premiership.

It marks the club's first official outing since Shane Flanagan took over as head coach.

  • Date: Saturday, March 9th
  • Time: 7:35pm AEDT / 6:35pm QLD
  • Where: Cbus Super Stadium, Gold Coast
  • Watch: Kayo & Foxtel

Viliami Fifita has been named to make his NRL debut off the interchange for the Dragons.

A Fairfield United junior, Fifita joined the Red V mid-way through 2023 after being granted a release by the Sea Eagles and went on to make 15 Knock-On Effect NSW Cup appearances.

The 23-year-old has impressed the coaching staff throughout the preseason and trial period and has been rewarded with a maiden NRL jersey as a result.

Kyle Flanagan, Tom Eisenhuth, and Raymond Faitala-Mariner have all been named to make their club debuts.

Flanagan will partner skipper Ben Hunt in the halves, Eisenhuth starts in the second row, and Faitala-Mariner joins Fifita on the interchange.

Jacob Liddle (hamstring) has been named to start but Blake Lawrie (ribs) was ruled out 24 hours prior to kick-off.

For the hosts, David Fifita and Jayden Campbell are both unavailable due to injury paving the way for Keano Kini and Klese Haas to earn run-on nods.

Offseason addition Keenan Palasia starts in the No.13 jersey with AJ Brimson named in the centres for just the second time in his NRL career.

The Dragons and Titans have faced each other on 29 occasions over the years with the Dragons having come out on top in 18 of them.
