St George Illawarra Dragons National Youth Competition winger Leigh Higgins was pleased with his efforts during his first hit out of the season with the young Dragons.

The Red V debutant hails from Cronulla's Harold Mathews and SG Ball junior representative squads, but seized an opportunity to play for the Dragons.

"I'm originally from Cronulla, but was offered the opportunity to play with the Dragons U20s squad, so I grabbed it with both hands," said Higgins.

"It's a great club to be part of and I'm learning a lot with Ben and Dean.

"I was really happy to have the chance to play with the boys last week, they've really taken me under their wing and helped me with my game.

"It's definitely a lot faster than what I'm used to and obviously we were a bit disappointed with the result but on a personal front it's good to get the first game out of the way.

"I thought Adam Clune was a stand out, he took control of the team during the game and steered us down the paddock.

"It will be a good test this week against the Titans, we've been working on a few things during the week at training, so hopefully we'll come home with a win.

"I'm really loooking forward to improving my own game and hopefully I'll keep my spot in the team."
