Dragons get past Wests Tigers at Jubilee

The Dragons celebrated their first home win in almost 11 months with a crowd-pleasing 24-10 victory over the Wests Tigers at St George Venues Jubilee Stadium.

Two weeks after missing a crucial conversion late in a tight loss to the Newcastle Knights, Dragons outside back Valentine Holmes scored two tries and kicked four goals to help secure the much-needed competition points.

The Dragons got off to a horror start with a messy, last-tackle sequence two-and-a-half minutes in resulting in Clint Gutherson being sent to the sin-bin for illegally taking out Apisai Koroisau as he went after a grubber.

It allowed the Wests Tigers to nab first points, with Adam Doueihi sweeping down the left-hand side to slam the ball down to make it 4-0.

Video officials denied Tyrell Sloan a try soon after but it did little to deter the Dapto junior who finished off a sideline-to-sideline effort sparked by a Kyle Flanagan kick with Hamish Stewart throwing the final pass to his flying winger for a 4-4 score line.

Holmes was then denied a try for the Red V after video officials ruled that Stewart had taken out a defender on his lead run.

The Dragons lost Sloan to a hamstring issue a half-hour in, forcing Holmes to push out to the wing and Damien Cook to shift into the centres.

A gift penalty goal on the stroke of half-time saw the home side take a 6-4 advantage into the sheds.

Doueihi scored a miracle try for the Wests Tigers early in the second half, grounding his own grubber a millimetre inside the dead ball line to put the visitors back on top 10-6.

The Dragons locked the scores with 10 minutes to go through Holmes who finished off a clunky but effective left-side shift.

The veteran then stepped up to convert his own try from out wide, giving the Red V a two-point edge.

Late converted tries to Holmes and Mathew Feagai sealed the victory to send the Kogarah faithful into a frenzy.

The Dragons now head into their third and final bye, with their next game coming in Round 20 against the Warriors in New Zealand.
