NSW Women’s Premiership Report: Round 1

The St George Dragons and Illawarra Steelers competed in the opening round of the 2026 NSW Women’s Premiership season over the weekend.

ST GEORGE DRAGONS

St George started their 2026 campaign in strong fashion taking down the Bulldogs 26-20 at St George Venues Jubilee Stadium on Saturday.

The visitors struck first through Hannah Makira before back-to-back tries to Tahli Curtis and Jezebel Navusolo saw the Red V storm ahead.

Charlotte Eather scored for Canterbury prior to the break to cut their deficit back to just two.

Dior O’Davis was binned for the Dragons early in the second half opening the door for Canterbury to snatch two quick tries via Milahn Ieremia and Eather.

Upon her return to the field, O’Davis went over to lock things up at 16-apiece before Danii Gray found a try to put the Dragons back on top.

The back-and-forth nature of the affair persisted with Shafenior Lui scoring to bring the visitors back within two and set up a grandstand finish.

The day belonged to the Dragons however with Navusolo going over for her second to seal it and get the squad on the board for 2026.

ILLAWARRA STEELERS

The Steelers pieced together a dominant display to kick-off their campaign dispatching of the Magpies 40-6 at Ringrose Park.

The points began flowing early for the Steelers with Kiara Kostovski, Georgie Barrett, and Tayleah Handcock all managing tries in the opening quarter of the match.

Kostovski found a second prior to half-time to make it 20-0 heading into the sheds.

Handcock snagged her second 48 minutes in before Kostovski secured her third of the match soon after.

Alysha Bell got the hosts on the board an hour in but late tries to Rhian Yeo and Gwen Swann sealed a key win for Illawarra.
