Around The Grounds | Jersey Flegg Round 8

It’s been another exciting round of the Jersey Flegg Cup with the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks moving to the top of the table after a convincing win over the Victoria Thunderbolts while the Parramatta Eels are starting to build some nice momentum after consecutive victories.

Bears remain winless despite Souths scare

The North Sydney Bears put up a strong showing against South Sydney on Thursday night, but it was not enough to secure their first win of the season after a late surge from the Rabbitohs saw them score a comfortable 26-12 win.

South Sydney opened the scoring in the 7th minute through front rower Ky Rodwell before the Bears hit back five minutes later through fullback Corey Fenning. Rabbitohs winger Jack Frasca scored the home side’s second four-pointer just before the break to take a 12-6 lead into the sheds.

The Bears regained momentum early in the second half after Corey Fenning secured a double to lock the scores up at 12-all. It remained that way until the final 20 minutes where South Sydney scored 3 quick tries to set up the victory and snuff out a valiant effort from North Sydney.

Sharks take top spot

The Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks are the outright competition leaders after their sixth win of the season with a 28-4 victory over the Victoria Thunderbolts at PointsBet Stadium.

Pivot Jayden Millard scored first the Sharks in the opening five minutes, followed by two more first half tries through centre Vito Tevaga and Jonah Ngaronoa. The Sharks had to wait until the 49th minute to score again but the floodgates opened with three more tries and a second four-pointer for Tevaga.

The Sharks conceded just one try to Thunderbolts winger Josese Waqalevu in what turned out to be a convincing performance in front of their home crowd, which now sees them in top spot on the Jersey Flegg Cup ladder after eight rounds.

Two on the trot for Eels

The Parramatta Eels are building momentum nicely in the Jersey Flegg Cup after recording their second win of the season in as many weeks, defeating the St George-Illawarra Dragons 22-10.

The Eels were on the scoreboard within two minutes after winger Tyler Tuigamala pounced on a grubber kick from five-eighth Joseph Taipari. Taipari quickly followed up with a try of his own in the 6th minute before lock Arron Shelford crossed the line 20 minutes later.

A first half double to Dragons winger Sam McCann was the high point of the match for the Red V as they trailed Parramatta 16-10 at the break.

Eels hooker Kyle Schneider managed to score the sole try of the second half with 15 minutes left, finishing the game with an individual tally of 10 points and sealing the win for the home side.

After a slow start to 2019, the win was vital for the Eels as they approach the halfway point of the season.
