Young Dragons leave it late against Warriors
The St George Illawarra Dragons NYC team have scored a try at the death to steal a 24-22 win over the New Zealand Warriors at FMG Stadium, Waikato on Friday night.
An offload from Tristan Sailor in the final three minutes found Steven Marsters who scored in the corner, as the Dragons hit the lead for the first time in the game with mere seconds remaining.
Down 22-10 at one stage, tries to Reece Robson and Dylan Morris (his second for the afternoon) helped peg back the deficit before Marsters scored the winner.
Far from smooth sailing for the young Dragons, they conceded the first try of the afternoon when Warriors winger Lewis Soosemea scored in the 16th minute.
Morris helped the game return to equal-pegging when he produced a length of the field intercept in the 23rd minute.
The Warriors returned to the lead when halfback Chanel Harris-Tavita crashed over eight minutes later.
While Matheson Johns scored just before half-time, a missed conversion from Zac Lomax meant the Dragons headed into the sheds down 12-10.
The Warriors kicked on in the second half when Soosemea (his second) and hooker Erin Clark scored tries in quick succession after the break.
But it wouldn't stop the Red V from marching back into it with three late tries to seal the two-point win.
St George Illawarra Dragons 24 (Dylan Morris 2, Matheson Johns, Steve Marsters, Reece Robson tries; Zac Lomax 2 goals) defeated New Zealand Warriors 22 (Lewis Soosemea 2, Chanel Harris-Tavita, Erin Clark; Kane Telea 3 goals) at FMG Stadium, Waikato. Half-time: Warriors 12-10.
