The St George Illawarra Dragons will help to continue fostering the growth of female rugby league participation by supporting the “November Nines” taking place at Ziems Park, Corrimal throughout November.

The endeavour is aimed at providing new players with the opportunity to try rugby league in a format that emphasises the attacking side of the game.

Competitions will be conducted in both open age (18 years and over) and U17 (girls 15-17 years).

Furthermore, the Illawarra Women in Defence League will look to establish an U18 division in addition to the current open aged competition in 2017, and the “November Nines” is an ideal way for new players to get a feel for rugby league with a view to playing in the 2017 competition.

With the announcement of the Tarsha Gale U18 Nines commencing in 2017, the “November Nines” will also serve as the initial step in identifying talent to join the preliminary squad to begin preparing for this new competition.

Interest has already come from players and clubs outside of Illawarra to be a part of the “November Nines”.

“With input from CRL and NRL development we have put together an event which will focus on providing a fun and enjoyable introduction to new players, as well as assisting with skills development,” said Illawarra Division Rugby League Manager Chris Bannerman.

“Teams are limited to only five players currently registered in 2016, so each team will provide plenty of opportunity for new players to take part in games and learn the game.

“NRL Development will provide skills sessions before games commence to assist new players take part with confidence.”

The “November Nines” will commence on Friday 4 November at Ziems Park, Corrimal, with games played in the evening from 6.00pm.

Corrimal, Berkeley and Bomaderry clubs who currently field teams in the Women in Defence League are actively seeking new players to take part.

Interested individuals should contact a club or Illawarra Division Rugby League Manager Chris Bannerman to register and join a team.
