St George Illawarra Dragons Women’s NRL Nines five-eighth Talia Atfield has been named the Women in Defence Illawarra League Player of the Year for 2016.

The Bomaderry Swamp Rats pivot was awarded for her efforts throughout the season at the annual Paul McGregor Medal Presentation held on Friday.

Atfield, a prolific try-scorer who tallied 14 tries this season, was part of the inaugural Dragons Women’s NRL Nines team which were narrowly defeated 16-12 by the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks at Southern Cross Group Stadium, Cronulla on Saturday, August 27.

Furthermore, Dragons National Youth Competition team halfback Joe Lovodua was awarded the U18 Alex Jack Memorial Trophy for being that age-level’s Player of the Year.

The local Kogarah Cougars junior, who recently re-signed for a further two seasons, represented the Helenburgh Tigers this season in the Illawarra League when not representing the Young Dragons.
