St George Illawarra Dragons National Youth Competition hooker Cooper Purcell is focused on playing his part in the Qualifying Final fixture against the North Queensland Cowboys at Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane on Friday.

The local Thirroul Butchers junior, who re-signed with the Red-and-Whites for a further two seasons, is a recent addition to the squad having been elevated from the Illawarra Steelers SG Ball ranks earlier this year.

The rake was amongst the scorers during the 26-16 win over the Newcastle Knights last round to help the team achieve third place on the competition ladder.

“I saw the hole and it was a great run from Keelyn Tuuta-Edwards who got the offload and it was really exciting,” said Purcell.

“Coach Mat Head though touched upon a few things that we need to work on but at the end of the day we worked really hard and got the win.

“Re-signing with the Club was a great thing and I cannot wait to continue growing as a player here throughout the Finals Series and next year.

“Just getting the chance to understand the contact and the speed of the game at this age level has been very helpful as I prepare for next year.

“It also helps having some good friends here which helps build good comradery.

“I am enjoying the opportunity of playing for the team and happy to play my part when some of the more senior players come back and become available for selection.”
