The St George Illawarra Dragons are inviting all Red V Members and Corporate Partners to join them for one of the premium events on the sporting and business calendar as they celebrate the 50th anniversary of the “Never Before, Never Again” era.
On Thursday, September 8, join the Honourable John Howard OM, AC, Mark Taylor AO, living legends from this sporting era and other distinguished guests to honour the players who helped etch this feat into the annals of sporting history at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
The St George Dragons conquered all who opposed them in a period of time which saw them claim a world-record 11 straight Premiership victories between 1956 and 1966 – to this day a feat which has never been challenged.
“St George and its achievements obviously hold a special place in the history of the game, and many factors and many men played their part in the success that came,” reflected 10-Premiership winner Norm Provan.
“I think, though, that the key factor in the years 1956-1966 lay in one basic ingredient – pride.
“I guess we all had it. Pride in ourselves, and pride in the club we played for.
“We never talked about it…it was just something that was there, and it grew year by year.”
The record of the era was extraordinary: 222 first-grade games played during the period, for 183 wins, five draws and 34 defeats.
The Dragons fielded 85 players during this remarkable era with each contributing to the 1,039 tries and 996 goals for 5,109 points.
Furthermore, 42 players took part in the 11 Grand Finals as they went on to score 205 points to 63 – conceding only five registered tries against them in the process.
