The St George Illawarra Dragons High Performance Unit were defeated 28-4 by the Wests Tigers Cubs at Campbelltown Stadium on Monday.

This was the first outing for the Dragons HPU squad following a week of combined training between the St George district and Illawarra district team in Wollongong.

In comparison, the Tigers outfit had come off several fixtures against the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks, Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and Penrith Panthers.

The game itself served as a reward for the fantastic effort the players have been putting into their HPU training and provided them the opportunity to perform on the big stage as the opener for the Wests Tigers v Melbourne Storm first-grade fixture.

“It was a great to see our young elite players play together as a combined St George Illawarra team,” said Dragons HPU Director Dean Young.

“It gave the coaching staff the opportunity to see where the boys were at and what areas they need to improve on.

“It shows the players need to continually work hard on their game and I know the boys enjoyed the experience and that it certainly is something we will look at in the future".
