St George Illawarra second-rower Will Matthews is eager to walk down memory lane when he comes up against former club the Gold Coast Titans at Cbus Super Stadium, Robina on Sunday.

The Kyogle Turkeys junior made his first-grade debut for the opposition midway through the 2008 campaign, ironically against the Dragons, and went on to amass 33 appearances over a four-year stint north of the state line.

Matthews, 26, has made 16 first-grade appearances since donning the Red V jersey in 2012 and has featured in every line-up since Head Coach Paul McGregor took over the reigns.

“This will be the first time I’ve gone up against the Titans since leaving, it’ll be good to have a run around the old stadium,” said Matthews.

“There are still a few guys up there that I used to play with so it should be a good test for me.

“There’s no one in particular that I’m looking forward to going up against; I think if I go out of my way to focus on that I’ll risk making mistakes out there.

“We’ve been talking about our run to the Finals and we know we need to start pulling a few wins together so we can make it to the eight.

“I played under Paul McGregor when he coached the Illawarra Cutters and I think his coaching structure suits the way I play.

“I’ve been lucky to have a spot in the side for the past few weeks and will work hard to try and make that continue.”
