Illawarra Cutters Head Coach Ian Millward is pleased by the performance demonstrated in the 24-14 win over the Newtown jets at WIN Stadium, Wollongong on Saturday.

Millward admits the match was won heavily due to the team’s defence but has identified several handling errors in attack which need to be remedied.

“Our defence was what won us the game,” said Millward.

“It was good to get the win when we didn't play at our best as it shows the boys have a winning attitude.

“We lost a lot of ball and we gave a lot of ball back and we need to work on our completion rate next week if we want to keep winning.”

Cutters captain Ryan Carr conceded it was an ugly win but seconded Millward’s thoughts on the team’s defence.

“We were scrappy but we defended really well and that was a positive,” said Carr.

“We can’t rely on our defense each week and we know that and we will improve as the season goes on.

“But for now we will just be happy with the win, and aim to improve for next week.”
