St George Illawarra Dragons centre Peter Mata’Utia is excited by the imminent commencement of the new season.

The Bankstown Cougars junior admits he has been working hard this preseason to get his body in good shape as the Red V commence preparation against Wests Tigers in the opening marquee home clash at ANZ Stadium, Olympic Park on Sunday, March 9.

The inside-edge scored twice against the South Sydney Rabbitohs in the Charity Shield last round and hopes to emulate that if given the chance again.

“I loved playing in the Charity Shield; I watched it growing up and to sit on the bench and then get a run was a great feeling, it was awesome to get out there and play with the boys,” said Mata’Utia.

“I think the footy gods were looking down on me when I scored those two tries, the game plan we had worked out happened to work out on my edge and I was lucky enough to get over twice.

“The main thing that Coach has said for us to work on is our defensive and attacking structures so they work; if we stick to that we will go far as a team.

“I think we’re looking good heading into the opening round as we’ve had a long, hard preseason and the vibe at training is good.

“My main goals for 2014 are to do my best at training and fight for a position in the Red V; competition for a position in the team brings the best out in everyone and I want the best out of me.”
