Host of Dragons set to make their mark on Wheelchair World Cup

A strong contingent of Wheelchair Dragons players are set to showcase their talent on the international stage, with several squad members selected to represent their respective nations at the 2026 Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup in Wollongong.

Leading the charge is Australian representative Cory Cannane, who will contest his second World Cup after previously representing the Australian Wheelaroos at the 2022 tournament.

Widely regarded as one of the game's most exciting attacking players, Cannane's pace and finishing ability make him a genuine threat in the tournament. He is expected to be among the competition's leading try-scorers as Australia aims for World Cup success on home soil.

The Dragons will also be well represented in the New Zealand WheelKiwis squad, with Pele Sulusi and Mitch Stone earning selection for their World Cup debuts.

Adding further Dragons influence to the international tournament, Wheelchair Dragons Head Coach Edie George will take the reins as New Zealand's head coach.

While the WheelKiwis are relative newcomers to wheelchair rugby league at the international level, the squad will benefit from the experience and leadership of Stone, Sulusi, and George as they prepare for the biggest competition in the sport.

The tournament's opening round will provide an immediate highlight for Dragons fans, with Australia and New Zealand set to face each other in a highly anticipated clash.

With Dragons players featuring on both sides of the contest, the match promises to be a showcase of the club's growing influence within wheelchair rugby league and an opportunity for its athletes to shine on the world stage.

The international selections come on the back of a strong domestic campaign for the Wheelchair Dragons, who recently fell just short in the NSW Cup Wheelchair Grand Final, suffering a narrow defeat to the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

Despite the disappointment, the season highlighted the strength of the Dragons' wheelchair rugby league program and provided a platform for several players to earn representative honours ahead of the World Cup.

As the tournament approaches, Dragons supporters will have plenty of reasons to follow the action, with players and coaches set to play key roles for both Australia and New Zealand in Wollongong.

Australia open their campaign against New Zealand on Saturday, October 31st at WIN Entertainment Centre with kick-off at 5:30pm.
