Jersey Flegg: Sizzling Dragons storm past Knights

The Dragons returned their winning ways in Maitland storming past the Knights 62-14 on Sunday afternoon.

Toby Rumble managed a four-try haul whilst skipper Eden Hodges found two of his own and teenagers Oliver Burton and Creighton Meafou notched their first Jersey Flegg tries.

It marked the side’s eighth win from their past nine and their biggest winning margin of the season.

It took just four minutes for the Red V to strike with Creighton Meafou pouring through a hole and putting David Afu over untouched in the right-hand corner.

The Knights responded shortly after with Melchizedek Nonu going over off a nice Jaylan Bishop cut-out to level things at four-apiece.

Marley McLaren’s boot laid on a try for the Red V their next opportunity with Meafou going aerial to knock it back for a supporting Ben Jackson to score.

They extended their lead moments later with Oliver Burton shooting through down a narrow short side from inside his own half and finding Lucas Borg back on inside before recollecting it to dive over.

Meafou’s strong opening forty continued the next set with the 18-year-old back-rower slicing through off a nice Eden Hodges delivery to notch his first Jersey Flegg try.

A half-hour in, Rumble produced a phenomenal individual effort for his first try of the afternoon burning his opposite from 65 metres and racing past the fullback to score.

He found a second prior to the break off the back of a pinpoint Hodges cut-out to push the visitors’ advantage out to 28-4 headed into the intermission.

The break did little to cool the Dragons down with McLaren showcasing his running game early in the second stanza and powering his way over as the margin grew into an imposing one.

The Dragons found another their next set with Hodges putting in a cross-field kick for a rapid Rumble who took in and motored away to score and make it 40-4.

The Knights were able to stop the bleeding momentarily with Bishop and Nonu again combining to lay on the latter’s second.

Undeterred, the Dragons hit back their next set with Viliami Amone cruising into space and sending the ball inside to a supporting Isaiah Fagalilo to score.

Harrison Cash found another for the Knights 64 minutes in before the Dragons surged home to seal it.
