Knock-On Effect NSW Cup: Dragons go down to Warriors in wet

The Dragons were bested by the Warriors 24-20 in their Knock-On Effect NSW Cup Grand Final re-match in slippery conditions at St George Venues Jubilee Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Late tries to Connor Sadler and Toby Rumble set up a frantic finish for the Red V who looked destined to snatch victory at the death only for a desperate Warriors cover effort to thwart the raid.

The Dragons nabbed the first points of the contest a little over 10 minutes into proceedings with prop Jacob Webster crashing over virtually untouched under the sticks off a pinpoint Ha’ele Finau face ball. Tom Kirk knocked over the extras to make it a 6-0 Dragons lead.

Kirk found himself on the scoresheet again moments later diving over in the northwestern corner off the back of a brilliant Jarrah Treweek flick pass to make it a double-digit difference.

The Warriors managed a needed response just shy of the half-hour mark with Makaia Tafua burrowing his way over out of dummy-half.

The visitors found a try just shy of the break through Jeremiah Lemana in the left-hand corner with Adam Pompey stepping up to add the extras and earn the Warriors their first lead.

The second half started in similar fashion for the visiting side with Jett Cleary showing and darting his way to the stripe as their advantage improved beyond a converted try.

Matthew Alhazim went agonisingly close to producing a bullocking, individual effort to score only for the officials to rule a knock-on in his grounding attempt.

It was instead the Warriors who struck next with Daeon Amituanai scooping up a Dragons knock-on and racing away 60 metres untouched to score.

The Dragons found a needed try through 20-year-old back-rower Connor Sadler who won the race to a Joseph O’Neill grubber.

Toby Rumble went over again for the Dragons moments later to set up a grandstand finish, but the side’s last-ditch effort to snatch the result came up short as the Warriors came out on top.
