Junior Reps Report: Round 9

The St George Dragons and Illawarra Steelers competed in Round 8 of the 2026 NSWRL Junior Reps season over the weekend.

SG BALL

The Dragons fell to the Panthers 40-12 in their final clash of the season despite Cornelius Pupualii continuing his strong try-scoring form.

Pupualii got the Red V on the board just four minutes in before Penrith nabbed tries through Ellyjah Birve, Thomas Goodfield, Ryan Goncalves and Darcy Feltham to make it 20-6 headed into the sheds.

Goncalves found another early in the second stanza before Pupualii notched a second of his own to stop the bleeding for St George.

Late tries to Feltham, Tyler Peken, and Steven Whalan however sealed it for the visiting side.

The Steelers finished their year with a 30-22 win over the Warriors at Collegians on Saturday.

The hosts got off to a sizzling start with Tyson Walker, Cooper Morrison, Sonny MacGregor and Marley McLaren all going over in the opening quarter of the match to make it 20-0.

Undeterred, the visitors stormed back into the contest with centre Parekaahu Keepa snatching three tries in the space to eight minutes to cut the deficit back to just two heading into the break.

Flynn O’Mara crossed for the Steelers early in the second stanza to improve the buffer before MacGregor found a second to make it 28-18.

Refusing to yield, the Warriors edged closer once more with Wiremu Makea crossing an hour in only for the Steelers to hold on and knock over a late penalty to secure the win.

TARSHA GALE CUP

St George went down to Penrith 44-4 in their Tarsha Gale Cup meeting at St George Venues Jubilee Stadium on Sunday.

Samantha Hanrahan, Ella Walker, Anita Ropati and Hannah Ison crossed for the visitors to give them a 20-0 half-time lead.

Morgan Simon found the Dragons' first points in the early exchanges of the second half before Penrith turned on the jets.

Hanrahan found her second and thirs tries whilst Ella Knowles, Naioka Tuipulotu, and Sapphire Harris also joined her on the scoresheet.

The Steelers stormed past Melbourne 32-10 at Collegians on Saturday in a handy tune-up as they prepare for finals action.

Sienna Young got things started for the hosts just two minutes in before captain Kiara Kostovski crossed to make it 8-0 a quarter of the way in.

Melbourne found a needed answer soon after through Gina Aiono only for a 27th-minute Michala Hardy try to earn the Steelers an eight-point half-time advantage.

Halle Barrett found her first of the day early in the second period before Ebony Heurea scored for the Storm to cut the deficit back to just a converted try with 25 minutes remaining.

A late Steelers surged sealed things however with Hardy, Madison Hemopo, and Barrett all securing four-pointer in a furious seven-minute stretch to push the hosts to their third win on the trot.

HAROLD MATTHEWS CUP

The Dragons showed some late resolve but were unable to run down Penrith going down 32-8 in their Harold Matthews Cup clash on Sunday.

Tries to Zack Fitzgerald, Ezekiel Tutaia, Amos Viiga, Jimmy Monk, Kingston Graham-Withell and Jaylin Moran saw the visitors leap out to a 32-point edge early in the second half.

Jack Lambert found two quick tries for the Red V to stop the bleeding and, whilst their defence tightened up, it proved too little as the Panthers came away with a 24-point victory.

Harold Matthews Cup Round 9 Highlights: Dragons vs. Panthers

Illawarra punched their Top 4 ticket with a dominant 36-6 win over the two-time defending premier Warriors at Collegians on Saturday behind a Hunter Fangupo hat-trick.

The athletic prop found tries No.1 and No.2 in the opening seven minutes of the clash to get the Steelers off to a flyer.

The good times continued to roll for the home side with Ryland Coelho, Xaviar Laidlaw, and Naite Gibbs also finding first-half tries to make it 28-0.

Captain Asher Chapman went over for the Steelers in the opening set of the second half to push them further ahead.

The Warriors managed their first try of the clash soon after through Koia Cook only for Fangupo to snatch his third late via a damaging drop-out return to seal the win in style and secure a Top 4 finish for the Steelers.

LISA FIAOLA

St George went down to Penrith 54-12 to end their Lisa Fiaola Cup season at St George Venues Jubilee Stadium on Sunday.

The Panthers rushed out to a 38-0 lead behind a double to Jizelle Thompson-Liveti as well as tries to April Gardiner, Mary Polu, April Gardiner, Lilianne Halangahu and Hanna Masic.

Braxton Brown got the Red V on the board prior to the break before Bailee-Kapri Rio-Tuima snagged the first points of the second half for the hosts.

Masic found a second for Penrith soon after before Isabella Ferguson and Gardiner also found late tries.

Lisa Fiaola Cup Round 9 Highlights: Dragons vs. Panthers

Illawarra were bested by Melbourne 46-0 in their final clash of the 2026 Lisa Fiaola Cup season at Collegians.

The Storm took a 32-0 lead into the half courtesy of tries to Heather Nasilai, Keira Collins, Makerita Seinafolava, Halo Matthews, Harmony Taupau and Makerita Seinafolava.

Caprice Buskermolen joined the scorers early in the second stanza before Collins and Matthews secured late doubles to ice the win.
