Junior Reps Report: Rd 5

The Illawarra Steelers competed in Round 5 of the 2026 NSWRL Junior Reps season over the weekend with all four St George Dragons teams enjoying a bye.

SG BALL

The Steelers went down to the Magpies in a heartbreaker on Saturday afternoon at Collegians falling 22-18.

The Magpies found two early tries through Aaron Paea and Siotame Havea Jr. to open up an early, double-digit lead.

Captain Beau Baldock found a needed try for the Steelers a half-hour in off a deft Marley McLaren grubber.

The Steelers found some more success early in the second half with a slick, right-side shift sending Sonny MacGregor over in the corner to put the visitors on top.

McLaren stepped his way to the stripe soon after to extend the Steelers' lead beyond a converted try.

James Lanyon went over for the Magpies an hour in to keep their hopes alive before Christian Taupau-Moors crashed over with five minutes on the clock for what proved the match-winner.

TARSHA GALE CUP

The Steelers narrowly went down to the Sharks 18-14 in their Tarsha Gale Cup clash in the Shire on Saturday.

Illawarra got off to a strong start courtesy of an early Ally Hamilton double.

With the Steelers down a player, Cronulla found a needed try early in the second half through Julliana Kolio.

Steelers captain Kiara Kostovski went over to make it 14-6 with a quarter of the match remaining.

A late Koffi Brookfield double sealed victory for the hosts however to break the hearts of the Steelers.

HAROLD MATTHEWS CUP

Illawarra stormed home to their fourth win of the season downing Western Suburbs 30-22 at Collegians.

There was plenty of action early on with the Steelers jumping out to a quick advantage as Destin Tausala crashed over in their opening set.

Cale Parr and Sam Duffy went bang-bang for the Steelers soon after to make it 20-0 with Monson Hopoate sent from the field for the Magpies in the aftermath of the second try.

Despite being down a man, Western Suburbs found two needed tries heading into th ebreak through Joshua Ratu and Sebastian Taylor.

Ratu found another early in the second stanza before Terowie Golding-Lyons went over to earn the visitors an unlikely lead.

Second-half tries to Api Amone and Preston Sager however saw the Steelers surge home and pick up a valuable victory on home turf.

LISA FIAOLA CUP

Illawarra went down to the Sharks 40-10 in their Lisa Fiaola Cup showdown on Saturday.

Both sides traded blows early with Shaleah Field and Ruby Seitula scoring for Cronulla and Jesse Rayner and Aliyah Plummer for the Steelers as the hosts took a 12-10 lead into the break.

The second stanza belonged to Cronulla however with Lata-Rose Faamasa, Tahli Weigand, and Eden Edwards all nabbing tries before Field and Seitula managed late doubles to seal it.
