Harvey Norman Women’s Wrap: Round 1

St George and Illawarra both competed in Round 1 of the 2025 Harvey Norman NSW Women's Premiership over the weekend.

ST GEORGE DRAGONS

The Dragons fell to last year's Preliminary Finalists Mounties 30-16 in Hinchinbrook on Saturday.

The scoring started early for the home side with Sarah Scambary and Marley Cardwell both crossing in the opening five minutes to make it 12-0.

Renee Targett's squad did well to wrestle back some momentum with five-eighth Sienna Stewart finding a try 23 minutes in.

Jayme Millard managed a second for the Red V a half-hour in to lock things up heading into the break.

Millard nabbed a second 10 minutes into the second period to put her side in front before the hosts surged home.

Logan Lemusu and Siu Richter went back-to-back for Mounties before Charis Toli snagged a late double to seal the victory.

ILLAWARRA STEELERS

The defending premier Steelers started their season off on the right foot with a 32-14 win over the Wests Tigers in Corrimal.

Makayla McFayden got the Steelers on the board in their opening set before Jessica Patea notched another eight minutes in to make it a double-digit game.

Kiara Kostovski joined the party soon after before the Wests Tigers were able to wrestle back some momentum through a Montana McLean four-pointer.

Maria Paseka crossed on the stroke of the siren to ensure the Steelers would have the final say of the opening half and take a 22-4 advantage into the sheds.

McLean grabbed a second for the visitors in their opening set of the second stanza before Tiresa Leasuasu went over 50 minutes in to cut their deficit back to just eight.

The Steelers finished with a flurry however thanks to tries to Kostovski and Tahlia O’Brien.
