Knock-On Effect NSW Cup: Dragons streak ends at WIN

The Dragons’ eight-game winning streak was snapped at WIN Stadium on Saturday afternoon with the Eels scoring a 36-22 win.

The visitors struck first through Liam Scolari after five-eighth Matthew Hunter shrugged away from multiple defenders before moving the ball onto Araz Nanva who sent his winger over in the northwestern corner of WIN Stadium.

Te Hurinui Twidle added the extras from just inside the touchline to make it a six-point game.

The Dragons marched down the field their next set and found a quick response through Loko Pasifiki Tonga who re-introduced himself to The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup in style utilising his size and athleticism to muscle his way to the chalk.

Jonah Glover knocked over the conversion from left of the sticks to tie things at six points apiece.

Play was brought to a halt for a short period as Cody Ramsey had his left ankle strapped off the back of an awkward tackle.

Tyrell Sloan made a big defensive play for the Red V shortly after jamming in to force an error as Parramatta sent an attacking raid down his edge.

Pasifiki Tonga continued his bruising start busting into the backfield and offloading to a supporting Connor Muhleisen who was brought down short of the stripe.

The hosts sent the ball left the following play with Michael Molo crafting an offload on his inside to Jonah Glover who shrugged his way over and converted his own try to make it 12-6.

Ramsey left the field for the Red V, but it did little to slow down their attack with the Finau brothers combining to lay on a try the side’s next set.

Sione burst into space down the left flank and pushed away from several defenders before putting his foot on the accelerator again and handing the ball off to brother Haele – who had come into the centres as a part of the re-shuffle forced by Ramsey’s absence – to score.

The Dragons’ momentum screeched to a halt soon after however with Glover binned for a professional foul as Parramatta crossed for their second of the afternoon through Nanva.

The Eels again utilised their one-man advantage to cross and wrestle back the lead through Twidle a little over a half-hour in.

They went close to finding another prior to the break off a Ronald Volkman grubber only for Beau Newlands to come up short in his grounding attempt.

The visitors extended their lead beyond a converted try in their opening set of the second stanza however through Hunter who finished things off after Scolari found room down the left touchline.

Their wave of momentum persisted their next set with Volkman slipping into the backfield and finding a supporting Brendan Hands to score as the game began to get away from the Red V.

Jacob Webster left the contest for the Dragons 54 minutes in for a HIA – which he ultimately passed – seeing Blake Lawrie re-inserted into the action.

The makeshift Finau brothers centre-wing combination helped the Dragons nab a needed try with a quarter of the clash remaining to cut the deficit back to eight.

Hunter took advantage of some loose Dragons defence however to hit back moments later and make it 36-22 which proved the final say of the match.
