Jersey Flegg: Dragons dominate Eels for key win

The Dragons stormed to a 64-6 win over Parramatta in their Jersey Flegg showdown at Croom Sporting Complex on Saturday.

It proved a key win for the squad who were able to knock off the fourth-place Eels in dominant fashion to inch a step closer to the Top 5.

The Dragons showed off some awesome attack to nab first points with Charlie Heidke fashioning a perfectly timed flick pass to Toby Rumble who sprinted into space down the right touchline before finding a supporting Tyler Peckham-Harris on his inside to score.

Kade Reed nailed the conversion to make it 6-0 less than 10 minutes in.

An Eel was placed on report the next set but a bungled kick for touch handed the visitors an opportunity to craft a response.

Heidke backed up his strong start with the ball down the other end by producing some strong contact to dislodge the ball and earn his side possession back.

The Dragons centre helped extend the lead moments later courtesy of a near length of the field intercept which saw him dive over under the posts untouched and make it a 12-point game.

The hosts spent a period soon after camped on the Parramatta line and found a way to score their third of the morning with Lyric Craft-Te Moananui muscling his way over off some nice ball-playing down the left-hand corridor.

Their hot first forty persisted the next set with Shadi Hammoud manufacturing a neat pass to send Jarrah Treweek into space with Isaiah Fagalilo finishing things off up the middle.

The Red V could do no wrong with Craft-Te Moananui slithering into the backfield once more and dummying and jinking his way to the stripe to make it three tries in as many sets.

Reed remained a perfect five-of-five from the tee to make it 30-0 a little over a half-hour in.

The Dragons were able to finish off a perfect first stanza with a sixth try courtesy of Rumble who was the beneficiary of a room service bounce.

A clearing Reed kick found grass and bounced fortuitously into the waiting arms of a chasing Cyrus Stanley-Traill who handed it off to his winger to make it 36-0 heading into the sheds.

Half-time did little to dull the Red V’s attacking appetite with Craft-Te Moananui linking with Jesse Williams to lay on another try in the left corner.

The Dragons’ defence was tested mid-way through the period but continued to find ways to repel Parramatta’s surge.

Dragons skipper Ryan Hutchinson was placed on report for a dangerous tackle just shy of the hour-mark with the Eels troubling the scorers for the first time off it through hooker Jack Hudson.

Heidke went close to adding to his try tally moments later off a Reed grubber only to have come up short on the grounding attempt.

Williams was however able to find his second of the contest off another near length of the field intercept in which the Dragons winger showed off his rapid speed to dive over under the goalposts and make it 48-6.

The Dragons brought up their half-century the next set with Craft-Te Moananui pouring through a hole to secure his hat-trick and continue his hot try-scoring form.

Jersey Flegg Cup Highlights: Round 17 v Eels

Rumble notched another for the Red V as time ticked away off a superb Reed cut-out.

The Dragons winger was clotheslined by Eels fullback Cameron Bamblett as he grounded it resulting in a send-off and a potential eight-point try.

Reed went one-from-two on the conversions to make it 58-6 the way of the hosts.

The Dragons weren’t done with yet however with Corey Ackers – in his first Jersey Flegg outing in over two years – crashing over to score and send his teammates into party mode.
