St George Illawarra recently lost one of its most loyal supporters in John Wesley Owsnett.
Affectionately known as Wes, Owsnett was born in Peakhurst and grew up in a Red V jersey. He would become a successful businessman, philanthropist, community-minded family man on top of being a Dragons tragic. All of this was achieved with his wife of over 50 years, Joy, alongside him.
The family's real estate business Professionals Padstow has consistently ranked as one of the top professional offices in Australia.
Wes became president of Padstow Chamber of Commerce and president of the local Lions Club which saw him distinguished with the Lions' highest award in the world, the Melvin Jones Award, in recognition of outstanding service.
Some of Wes's achievements included raising over $500,000 in 1983 for St Vincent Hospital's Victor Chang Institute and more recently for The Lung Foundation; a testament to his continuous and significant generosity to many charities and sporting organisations over the past five decades.
Wes's support of the Dragons was unflinching. He and his family organisation have been long-term and strong financial supporters of the club and its activities.
Wes was never known to hold back his views on team and management performance but always had the best for the Dragons at heart.
Wes, your smiling face will be missed at Dragons games. You could only be labelled as a great guy. The club also conveys its most sincere condolences to Joy and the Owsnett family.
May you rest in peace.
