St George Illawarra Dragons halfback Drew Hutchison has set several goals which culminate with him playing in the halves next season.

The local Albion Park-Oak Flats Eagles junior is aware he needs to decrease his body mass to be in fighting shape to claim the vacated role and partner captain Gareth Widdop.

Hutchison plyed his trade predominately with the Illawarra Cutters last season and an integral part of their NSW Cup Premiership and NRL State Championship success.

The pivot notes that those experiences have helped him become a more seasoned player and he hopes to show this if the opportunity arises.

“If I can play consistently then I have a chance of staking my claim to play in the halves which will be a good test,” said Hutchison.

“The goals for me so far are to get my skinfolds down a bit as well as the body weight as well as play some good footy by the time the trials roll around.

“No matter the position you need to be playing confidently and in the halves is no exception as you need to be demanding the ball and telling others where they need to go.

“Towards the end of last year, being able to play in some big games for the Cutters really helped me understand knowing when to make a play and which one to do.

“Pre-season so far has been great and I’m loving every minute of it so far.

“That’s not to say it not tough as they all are but you need to get over those first few weeks to really get going.”
