St George Illawarra Dragons utility Josh McCrone is humbled to be part of the ride ahead of the fixture against the North Queensland Cowboys at 1300SMILES Stadium, Townsville on Saturday.

The Temora Dragons junior has been the starting halfback for the previous two matches partnering co-captain Gareth Widdop in the halves but has been named on an five-man interchange following the return of teammate Benji Marshall (hamstring).

The NSW Country Origin representative admits he is happy to play wherever and whenever required but is keen to play again with the likes of Josh Dugan and Mitch Rein.

“The boys have stepped-up the past two weeks after the disappointing loss against the Sharks and I am happy to be coming along for the ride,” said McCrone.

“Gareth is a good player to be paired-up with and I’ve enjoyed playing alongside him these past two weeks.

“He doesn’t want to overcall the ball when on the field and fairly relaxed on the field too which helps him keep a cool head.

“I am ready for whatever opportunity I get against the Cowboys and there are a few things that I know I need to work on.

“Whether that’s in first-grade or reserve-grade has yet to be determined but I’ll just keep working hard regardless and take whatever opportunities come.

“Josh is also a good player who is very handy wherever you put him on the field and he’s proven himself as fullback from his performances on the field.

“Mitch is another guy who builds-up the yardage and gets us forward and gives some push while we prepare to kick.

“He has such a massive motor for such a little bloke and the amount of work he gets through is unbelievable which is inspiring.”
