Illawarra Cutters Head Coach Paul McGregor was happy with his team’s pre-season progress following the opening trial 24-16 win over the Windsor Wolves at Ron Costello Oval, Shelharbour on Saturday.
McGregor admits it was good observing his players compete in match conditions for the first time this season and has seen several positives from the performance on display.
"I got to see the boys play, it's one thing seeing them train, it's different seeing there in a game with people opposite them,” said McGregor.
"The pleasing thing for me was we came out with a win.
“Defensively we were physical which is always pleasing, they were very courageous.
"We're twelve months down the track from this time last year and we've got a core group of people here that can play at this level comfortably, we didn't have that last year.
"I thought Jake Hawkins stood out, it was very pleasing, his effort.. I thought Jimmy Grehan continued on with his form from the back end of last year.
"One game into a very long year but to get out there and get through the game injury free and give the guys a good run, I left most if them out there for as long as I could, give everyone an equal opportunity and that's what we tried to do tonight.
"You're looking at playing different combinations and seeing which ones are working, I've got a video of them playing so I can go home and look at it and dissect it."
