The St George Illawarra Dragons will wear black armbands in their Round 19 clash against the Canberra Raiders at GIO Stadium, following the passing of Ken Boothroyd.

Boothroyd was the head conditioner of St George throughout the 70s and played a crucial part in Dragons' grand final teams of 1971 and 1975 as well as the premiership-winning 1977 and 1979 seasons.

Boothroyd also played part in the early years of the Illawarra Steelers, again as head conditioner in 1982 and 1983.

He was well-respected by all players he was involved with and led the way with new and innovative training methods.

That respect extended to his teaching where he spent over 25 years at Kogarah Marist Brothers High School.

Boothroyd passed away on Monday following a long illness, aged 86.
