St George Illawarra Dragons National Youth Competition team halfback Jai Field is embracing every aspect of training with the first-grade pre-season train-on squad.

The local Shellharbour Sharks junior is one of five players from the Young Dragons ranks elevated to training the first-grade squad and the pivot admits his body is feeling the added intensity which comes the opportunity.

Field additionally notes that he is enjoying being able to train alongside players he has grown up watching and picking their brains for information.

“It’s great to be back running within a professional environment with the first-grade squad and seeing how I go with them,” said Field.

“This time last year I had planned to come to the NYC and do the best I could so to be here with the big boys twelve months on is a dream.

“It’s a great experience as you get to run around with the guys you grew up your whole life watching.

“I’ve grown up with Drew Hutchison and he’s heled me out a lot through my pathways so it’s been good to have him here.

“A guy like Tariq has been around it a fair while someone who is a bit younger is Jack de Belin who has also opened up to me and been good for me so far.

“Both Matt Dufty and I get along really well and last year coming into U20s and him having played there for the past three years he’s taken me under his wing a bit.

“All the boys elevated have been training well including guys like Reuben Garrick and Blake Lawrie who were both training during the pre-season last year.

“They are managing the demands well while both Reece Robson and I are coming to terms with everything.

“The body has been sore backing up after the running days and lower body weights which is something I’ve got to get used to.

“Hopefully my recovery stays well and if I can keep doing that I’ll be fine.”
