St George Illawarra Dragons second-rower Joel Thompson was awarded the prestigious 2016 Ken Stephen Medal for his work in the community at the Dally M Medal Awards in Sydney on Wednesday.
The five-time Indigenous All-Star was one of four finalists for the honour which reflects the player’s personal goal to inspire others, drawing upon his own life experiences.
The Ken Stephens Medal recognises the efforts of an NRL player who has not only achieved success and leadership on-field, but contributed to community projects off-field to make a positive difference and change.

Furthermore, Dragons Women’s NRL Nines second-rower Kezie Apps was named the Female Player of the Year.
The Dragons 2017 ‘Best You Can Be Diary’ Ambassador rounded-out a banner year of accolades which saw her recently also named the NSWRL Women’s NSW State Player of the Year for a strong performance for both state and local club Helensburgh.
