St George Illawarra Dragons halfback Drew Hutchison is humbled to have been involved in the 30-18 loss to the Parramatta Eels at Pirtek Stadium, Parramatta on Monday.

The local Albion Park Oak Flats Eagles junior partnered co-captain Gareth Widdop in the halves in lieu of teammate Benji Marshall and notched his first ever try and first-grade level in the loss.

Hutchison believes he will be better for the experience as he returns to action for the Illawarra Cutters against Wests Tigers in their Qualifying Final at UOW Jubilee Oval, Kogarah on Saturday.

“It was good to get the first try but obviously it wasn’t the result we were after but it gave me another taste of first-grade and I’m looking forward to coming back next year and doing it all over again,” said Hutchison.

“It was rewarding to get a game of first-grade under my belt again and no one is happy that we lost as we strive for greatness and perfection.

“Gareth and I talk regularly every day and gel well together and when it came to the kicking duties it was down to who was in the best position to take it.

“I was catching a breather by the end of it but again that is down to adapting to the speed of the game and hopefully with more games I can adapt better and hopefully come back bigger and stronger next year.

“The Illawarra Cutters have had a very successful season this season in the NSW Cup and for me personally I expect them to go deep into the competition.

“We have a strong side who can do it and it starts this week against Wests Tigers.

“It’s unreal getting to play with both Josh McCrone and Shaun Nona who are two quality players which makes it easier when named alongside either.

“We have been working on our own combinations and hopefully it helps us reach the Grand Final.”
