The St George Illawarra Dragons were defeated 42-6 by the Sydney Roosters at Allianz Stadium, Moore Park on Sunday.

The Red-and-Whites scored only the one try in the loss with co-captain Gareth Widdop crossing the stripe during the first stanza.

Head Coach Paul McGregor had opted to start utility Jake Marketo as hooker ahead of the fixture with Mitch Rein preferred on the interchange bench.

The Kiama Knights junior was joined by second-rower Luciano Leilua, who had been a late addition in lieu of prop Jacob Host, who featured earlier for the Club's National Youth Competition team.

The Roosters opened the scoring through second-rower Mitchell Aubusson in the 13th minute.

Roosters lock Sio Siua Taukeiaho converted the try to make it 6-0.

The hosts extended their lead near the half hour mark through fullback Blake Ferguson, who had managed a one handed pass away to Ryan Matterson.

Taukeiaho converted again to make it 12-0.

The Roosters lock later slotted a penalty goal after Widdop had been adjourned to have held on to second-rower Boyd Cordner for too long.

The Dragons however hit back to score their lone four-pointer of the game when Widdop crossed the stripe after controllong halfback Benji Marshall's chip kick.

The England international converted to make it 14-6.

The Roosters pressed their advantage inthe second stanza with two tries to winger Daniel Tupou and one to Ferguson in the space of six minutes.

Taukeiaho slotted two of his three attempts to make it 30-6.

The Roosters added to their lead when second-rower Aiden Guerra dove over the stripe on the hour mark.

Roosters winger Latrell Mitchell converted to make it 36-6.

Ferguson notched his second of the encounter five minutes from time to make it 40-6.

Mitchell added the extras to make it 42-6.
