The St George Illawarra Dragons are deeply saddened at the passing of Premiership-winning fullback Brian Johnson, on Tuesday.

The local Dapto-native, aged 59, passed away after a long-time battle with Alzheimer’s Disease and is survived by his wife Karen and two sons.

The talented custodian earned his sole representative honours by being named in the NSW Origin Country Firsts team in 1978.

He joined the Dragons the following season during and would go on to scribe his name onto the scoresheet in the 17-13 Grand Final victory over the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs at the SCG on September 22, 1979.

Johnson would go on to ultimately score 55 tries from over 120 first-grade fixtures for the Dragons in his seven-year career with the Club.

His skills were recognised when he was bestowed the Dally M 'Fullback of the Year' award in 1980.

Subsequently, Johnson would go on to represent the Sydney Roosters in 1986 before later that year commencing a three-season stint with the Warrington Wolves between 1986-1988.

Following his retirement, Johnson returned to the Dragons to take-up a coaching role within the Football Department which saw him orchestrate the Club's NSWRL First-Division Grand Final Premiership win in 2001.
