St George Illawarra Dragons five-eighth Gareth Widdop admits the team are aware of the necessity to improve their attacking capabilities following the 22-4 loss to the Melbourne Storm at McLean Park, Napier on Saturday.
The Red-and-Whites scored only the one try in the encounter with centre Peter Mata’utia crossing the stripe near the end of play.
Widdop concedes that the team’s current run of form which has seen them lose seven consecutive fixtures is not ideal but believes the personnel are in place to turn their season around.
“The result is certainly disappointing and it’s getting to the situation now where we need to be winning games,” said Widdop.
“The last few weeks have seen a lot of playing come in and out of the team with last week being the first time we have fielded our strongest side.
“If we keep the same players on the field now over the next seven weeks we will get the wins needed and all the players remain confident in their ability and know this can get turned around.
“The only way to turn this around is to remain confident it can be done and working hard at training and if we can do that then things can get turned around.
“We were unable to score the points we would have liked against the Storm but our attack does need to improve and for us at times stop just going through the motions.
“This is one area that needs to be changed and it has been addressed.
“We put ourselves in a good position on the competition ladder midway through the year and it is up to us regather that form and start winning games again.”
