The Glad Group Flames are the official squad of the St George Illawarra Dragons. Our Cheer Squad program not only showcases the support of our Senior Flames, but also encourages the next generation of young girls and boys to Ignite Support for our team through the Junior Flames. Our cheer school program in both Wollongong and Kogarah provides children aged 5-14 years the opportunity to learn dance routines and do regular exercise each week.

GLAD GROUP FLAME & JNR FLAME AUDITIONS FOR 2010

The Senior and Junior Flames Cheerleading tryouts showcased more talent and enthusiasm than ever before, ensuring that the Dragons support base will be well represented in 2010.

The Riviera Room at St George Leagues Club buzzed with excitement as event kicked off at 4.30 pm with the Junior Flames. The 43 Junior Flames participants were lead by Coach Miss Lisa, with returning teachers Miss Natasha and Miss Fiona on hand to put the younger girls through their paces. The girls practised their ‘run on’ lines, before dancing to the Black Eyed Peas for the judges. The routine gave the energetic younger girls the opportunity to showcase their dancing skills as well as their personalities, with a special freestyle section at the end that showcased cartwheels, round offs and even a few back flips!

Though the girls are encouraged to showcase their best skills at the auditions, Coach Lisa says that “personality and presence”, along with an ability to learn the choreography, are just as important as the execution.

The Senior Flames’ contestants kicked off later in the evening at 6pm. The girls got straight down to business, each performing an original piece of choreography for the judges to Britney Spears before joining in a group choreography session to display their combined talents and individual personalities.

Though the competition was fierce, the many fresh faces brought the best out of the experienced Flames and made the day an overwhelming success.

“It’s still just as nerve wracking and just as hard, especially with seeing a lot more new people.” 16-year-old Chanel said of the audition experience, “I just tried to practise the dance moves from last year and get ready as best I could”.

For many of the girls, the opportunity to continue old friendships and create new ones is a major reason for returning to the Flames.

“I enjoyed learning new moves and seeing new people join the squad” Ria, 9, said.

Regardless of the outcome, the afternoon and evening were enjoyable for all involved.

“Just come and try out. Even if you don’t make it into the squad the classes are great fun!” Chanel, 16.

Thanks to all participants for giving your all in support of the St George Ilawarra Dragons the level of enthusiasm at the tryouts is any indication, 2010 is going to be an exciting, adrenaline pumping year for the supporters of the Red V!
