Congratulations to the Dragons team, players and staff on receiving a special commendation at the NRL One Community Awards in Sydney on Tuesday night.
Taking place at Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Arts, the NRL One Community Awards is an annual event recognising members of the Rugby League family who are passionate contributors to the community through their involvement in the game. It is a unique event in which NRL players and Clubs share the stage with members of our grassroots family.
Dragons Community were one of eight finalists in the running to receive the prestigious Telstra ‘One Community NRL Club of the Year’ Award, which recognises the combined services of staff and players in giving back to the community.
The Gold Coast Titans took out the award, however in a first in the history of the awards, the NRL gave a special mention to Dragons Community, accrediting them for their high level of commitment to the community and the sport through their services and specialised community-based programs. The commendation is a tribute to the tireless work of staff across all departments who continually strive to make a difference in our community and beyond.
The highlight of the night came as the Thirroul Junior Rugby League Football Club came in a close second in the contest for ‘Grassroots Junior Club of the Year’ Award. This achievement is a reflection of the talent of the players, the quality of developmental programs and the professional dedication of the staff, all of whom should be congratulated for their outstanding achievements. The club’s strong progression and ongoing commitment are a great credit to the sport and its participants.
Recently retired Dragons players and cult hero, Wendell Sailor deserves an honourable mention as a nominee for the Telstra ‘Ken Stephen’ Medal which recognises an outstanding level of dedication to community services, inside and outside of club duties. Parramatta’s Nathan Hindmarsh received the Ken Stephen Medal.
Congratulations must also go to Debbie May from Woonona Junior Rugby League and Sue Hartley from Dapto Junior Rugby League who were finalists in the ‘Female Volunteer of the Year’ Award with Debbie being specially commended for her involvement in the game.
Dragons Community would like to say congratulations to all players, staff and volunteers, whose achievements were recognised through this event.
