Nowra Public School

Dragons Community spent the day in Nowra, visiting fours schools in support of the Positive Behaviour for Success (PBS) program. PBS is part of Dragons Community’s mentoring pillar and is conducted in partnership with the Department of Education and Training in the Illawarra and South Coast regions.

Dragons NRL prop Jon Green, Dally M NYC Player of the Year Beau Henry and NYC player's Shannon Wakeman and Joe Vickery joined Dragons Community and ARLD staff visiting the schools. Nowra PS, Nowra East PS, Nowra North PS and Havenlee SSP students' were lucky to take time out of the classroom to host the interactive assemblies.

Havenlee SSP

Players' discussed the Dragons three PBS values – Be respectful, Be responsible and Be a team player to the students and highlighted the synergy to each school’s very own values. The assemblies were a great opportunity for students to see how their school values can be applied to life outside of school and how their favourite rugby league players also follow sets of values.

The day was a great success with each school presented a framed Dragons values poster. Each school was also given Dragons posters, Dragons packs, Dragons hats and Dragons keyrings to give to students as incentives for positive behaviour both in the classroom and in the playground.

Below are student reports on the Dragons PBS Assemblies

Marissa Kielly - Nowra Public School, 5/6M
On Monday 9th November, some Dragons players came to Nowra Public School. There names were Jon, Shannon, Joe and Beau. Also four more people came; they were Natalie, Jessie, Paul and Adam.

At the start of the assembly, Paul was talking about the three Fs. They are fun, fitness and friends... Fun - having lots of fun while training and on the field, Fitness - staying fit by eating well and training well, Friends - make friends in your team, and sometimes the opposition.

In our school we have the STAR values; Safely behave, Take responsibility, Actively learn and Respect everyone...

...Paul called up six kids, one from each grade... He also called up six kids from year five, they were; Kyla, Samantha, Liam, Bruce, Thomas and me [Marissa]. We answered some questions and received hats.

At the end of the assembly, Leah [from year five], came up onto the stage and thanked them for coming. Zach and Hayden [vice and school captains] came up and were presented with a poster of the Dragons Values.

The assembly was awesome and lots of fun. Before we left the hall, we put our hands up in the air, and yelled “Go Dragons”...

Claudia, Shantelle, Shellie and Roseanna - Nowra Public School, Years 5 and 6

This morning 4 Dragons players (Jon, Shannon, Joe and Beau), Paul, Natalie (an ARL development officer who sometimes comes to our school), Adam (another ARL development officer) and Jessie from the Dragons came to our school. They talked about our school’s Star Values and the values the Dragons have. They also talked about how to get fit and stay healthy.

They told us their 3 F’s which are Fun, Fitness and Friends. They also told us their values were like our school’s STAR values. One of them 'respect everyone' is also one of our STAR values.

One person from each grade was selected to go up on stage to be asked a question. If they got the answer right, they would get a red and white cap.

They also talked about eating healthy and their training days. They said it was really important not to eat too much take-away foods.

It was fun meeting them, at recess I high fived Joe’s hand. It was a really cool experience to have them at our school.
