Dragons Community is now in its ninth year and is driven by its role as a representative of our community and committed to the positive role it plays within it.

Over the past eighteen months an independent strategic review of Dragons Community has been undertaken to ensure its associated programs are aligned to key social issues and areas of focus for Rugby League, and the Dragons continue to be leaders in this area.

Social Ventures Australia (SVA) undertook this review and the development of a strategic plan that supports the Dragons continued investment into a range of important community initiatives.

Dragons Community has a clear mission; to have a positive impact on people’s lives within our community, a community that stretches from Earlwood in the north to Bateman’s Bay in the south.

The objectives of Dragons Community are as follows:

  • To support and encourage young people, especially youth, to make positive choices around health, education and other social issues

  • To promote respect for self and others, responsibility and self-esteem

  • Promote rugby league as a means of delivering health benefits and promoting positive social interaction

  • Use the profile and the strength of the Dragons brand to assist selected local charities and associations

In 2016 Dragons Community will be involved in programs across three key areas of focus, Health & Wellbeing, Education and Skills & Social Inclusion.

Key initiatives and programs that are planned for delivery include:

  • Indigenous Engagement Strategy – RAP (Reconciliation Action Plan)

  • 2016 ‘The Best You Can Be’ school diary (second edition), presentimg a different health and wellbeing topic each school week including the importance of sleep, importance of family meal time, friendship, nutrition, respect, kindness, limiting screen time and self-image

  • Interactive Dragons Community website and Dragons Community App

  • Little Dragons Membership initiative for junior participants – implementation of the Little Dragons training diary

  • Expansion of the Score Dragons program for children with disabilities, awarded program of the year at the NRL Community Awards in 2015

  • ‘Best You Can Be’ schools program (schools using the Dragons School Diary receive additional benefits)

  • Dusty and Friends educational resource for early childhood programs

  • Back 2 Juniors program with player support for Junior Rugby League Clubs

  • Volunteer Program incliding School Ambassador initiative

The Dragons are aware of the role sport can play in achieving social change, especially with youth.

Dragons players particularly understand the unique position they are in to promote and encourage, either directly or indirectly, the physical, cultural and intellectual welfare of young people in our community.

Additionally, Dragons players also draw from their own lives to provide motivation for all children to be the best they can be in all aspects of life.

In 2016 Dragons players (NRL & NYC) spent 7,010 hours directly supporting Community activities.

Dragons Community Is Proudly Supported By Recoveries & Reconstruction.
